By Kevin Sims, Superintendent of Minco Schools.
In just a few weeks the Friday night lights will be bright in Minco and our “Boys of Fall” will be squaring off in a fan crazed atmosphere led by cheerleaders and the band. The enthusiasm for our football team is second to none in the area, and I would say that few places in the state of Oklahoma match our excitement for the pigskin.
Fan support is tremendous for Minco. You can count on around one thousand people at our home games, and generally we have more fans than the opponent when we travel. The support of our community for our football team is special, tremendous, and passionate.
The passion is wonderful, but there are a couple of reminders. #1. Be Loud! and #2. Be Respectful! With the passion comes a responsibility for the adults to cheer and not demean. Sports teaches our students to deal with adversity in a head-on way. When you compete, you have success, and you will have failure. Just like life. The lessons that our student athletes learn are valuable to their future lives.
This year Minco Public Schools will take action against fan behavior that is deemed abusive towards coaches, student athletes or officials. With the realization that we are going to yell for our teams, it’s important to not let anger overtake you to the point where you make personal attacks. Disrespect towards any of our athletes, coaches or game officials will not be tolerated. If you violate this, you can be warned, you can be removed from the game, and you can be banned from the Minco campus for up to six months for behavior that is considered demeaning and not suitable.
It is the administration’s goal that everyone has a great and raucous time cheering for the Bulldogs. Cheer hard but right. If any member of the administration hears a fan using demeaning or threatening language, that administrator will approach the fan and put a stop to it. There is no reason for this type of behavior.
We as Minco fans have every reason to be proud and should show it. I look forward to cheering with you this year as we embark on another year of strong success. I am proud to be a Minco Bulldog.
