The Chain of Command and Proper Communication
By Kevin Sims
Superintendent, Minco Public Schools
Minco Public Schools has a clear policy that explains how communication should be handled within our district. The first line of communication for most issues should be with the teacher, sponsor, or coach directly involved. In nearly all cases, the person closest to the situation is the one best suited to help. More than 95% of concerns can be resolved at this level.
If a concern cannot be resolved through direct communication, the next step is to contact the building principal. The principal will meet with you and the teacher, sponsor, or coach to help address the matter. In most cases, issues are resolved at this stage.
The third level of communication is with the superintendent. While very few issues make it this far, if you still feel your concern has not been handled appropriately, I will meet with you to look for ways to resolve the problem.
The fourth and final level is a formal board complaint. If a complaint is made to a board member, it will be directed to the superintendent, who will determine whether it should be placed on the board agenda. These instances are extremely rare and typically involve serious matters such as harassment or abuse. If an agenda item is necessary, you will be notified in writing of the date, time, and location of the meeting.
This process is not unique to Minco—it is identical to communication policies in school districts across Oklahoma. Again, 95% of problems are solved in the very first step.
It is also important to note that posting concerns about your child’s school, teacher, or coach on social media gossip sites will not resolve the issue. Concerns shared in this way will not be addressed by the district. Instead, please follow the proper chain of command to ensure your voice is heard and your concern is handled appropriately.
We are fortunate to be part of the Minco Public School system, and I am grateful for the opportunity to serve our students. Clear and respectful communication helps us preserve the high-quality education your children deserve.
